Giga Texas sits on the far east side of Austin, so a place that looks close on a map can still mean a long drive twice a day.
Finding a room to rent near Tesla can be harder than it sounds. Most of the city’s apartments and shared housing are west of the factory, and if you’re an intern, a lease short enough for a summer is even harder to find. Why does living close to Giga Texas matter?
Giga Texas is huge. The factory has more than 10 million square feet of floor space, and it sits on the east side of State Highway 130, away from most of Austin’s housing. Downtown Austin is about 22 minutes away on an empty road, and a lot longer at rush hour. Living nearby means more of your evening is yours, especially after a long shift.

Drive times are for an empty road. Giga Texas has roughly 16,500 employees, so shift changes add time around the factory entrances. It’s worth leaving a little early in your first week.
What is Caballo Blanco like for Tesla employees?
Caballo Blanco is about as close to Giga Texas as you can live. The neighborhood it’s in sits right next to the factory grounds, and since Tesla owns the land around it, there’s very little housing any closer. The drive is about 8 minutes and 2.7 miles. Most of Austin’s apartments and shared housing are closer to the city center, where the same commute is closer to 22 minutes without traffic, so that’s nearly a third of the drive.
Our Tesla residents tell us the short commute is the main reason they picked Caballo Blanco. After a long shift, you’re home in minutes instead of sitting on the highway.
Living near work doesn’t mean giving up the city, either. Downtown Austin is 15 to 20 minutes away, so it’s easy to get into town on the weekends for live music, food trucks, Lady Bird Lake, or whatever else you want to explore. The airport is about 5 minutes away, which helps when you fly home for a visit.
The house has two stories, 4 bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms, and the common areas are already furnished. Residents share a community pool, a large backyard, and a game room. H-E-B and Walmart are about 10 minutes away.
Is Chapala in Manor a good option for Tesla?
Chapala works well if you want a bigger, newer house and don’t mind a slightly longer drive. It’s about 17 minutes to Giga Texas, mostly on State Highway 130. The 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom home is walking distance from historic downtown Manor, and every bedroom there can be furnished, which helps if you’re arriving with a suitcase and not much else.

Can I rent a room for a Tesla summer internship?
Yes. Our minimum lease is 3 months, which lines up with most summer internships, and Tesla’s Austin internships are typically 12 weeks or longer. If your internship is a little shorter than 3 months, reach out and we’ll see what we can do.
Why do Tesla interns and new hires rent a room instead of an apartment?
Many of our residents have been Tesla interns and full-time employees. The reasons we hear most:
- It costs less than an apartment. You pay for your room plus an even share of utilities, not a full one-bedroom’s rent.
- It’s easier to make friends. Moving to a new city can be lonely at first, and a shared home gives you people to cook, work out, or explore Austin with.
- There’s less to set up. Common areas are furnished, utilities are coordinated for you, and shared spaces are cleaned monthly, so you can focus on your first weeks at work.
